“Well, I won’t follow what you teach….because it’s unethical.”
Oh man. That email triggered me. I was having a freakin’ fantastic day, too.
I just got an email from someone telling me this about, well, 45 minutes ago. It made me really sad to be honest with you.
I’ve been getting more of these comments lately.
The kind where somebody straight up smacks me in the mouth and questions my entire character because I tried to teach them how to write a headline.
The crazy thing is I’m getting grown ass men to do this to me.
Enough with the pity party.. If you want to write online for fun, fame, or fortune, just keep reading.
I want to keep you from falling into a BIG trap.
Some People Are Going To Come For Your Jugular
Some people skip the “well, I disagree with this,” and go right for the “you’re unethical, dishonest, a liar, and cheating thousands of people you f*cking useless sh*tstack.”
It’s true. I’ve seen it with my own eyes.
The comments, not the sh*tstack.
I’ll teach you how to deal with this in a second, but for now just remember this..
If you write anything online, or try to help people in any way, people are always going to question your motives. ESPECIALLY if you occasionally profit from it.
To some people, Donald Trump was a leader they 1,000 percent trusted. To others, he was practically sleeping with Vladimir Putin.
In fact, I bet a very small portion of the population legitimately believed he was sleeping with your boy VP.
Motives will always be questioned.
They’ll somehow make blanket statements about you despite not even knowing you.
Guess what? The people that talk sh*t about me barely know me.
But so do the people that sing my praises.
I admit I like hearing one more than the other, but at the end of the day I always remember this..
Only you know your motives. Only you know your true character. If something somebody said hurts you but does not match up with your character, let it the f*ck go.
Drop it right there. Close your laptop if you have to. Which leads me to my next point..
It Hurts, But Your Response Isn’t Going To Matter
When you’re a writer online, you have everything to lose when debating in the comments.
Especially if you have a lot of followers.
People will see you responding as a sign of weakness and the person commenting will feel like they’ve won because they’ve managed to get some — as they see it — “bigshot” to respond to them.
They’ve won the second you press publish.
This goes if you have 10k followers or 0.
You Brought This On Yourself
The day you were arrogant enough to publish words for the first time.
The day you dared believe your writing was worth something.
If you never blogged online, NOBODY would come for you in the comments.
So own it.
Good, now let’s talk about how you’re already ahead of 99.9% of other people.
Most People Take Criticism Like A 5-Year Old
Nobody wants to tell us we’re wrong because they don’t want to hurt our feelings.
So we live the vast majority of our lives without any whiff of real conflict.
Then one day we say “Gee, this whole blogging thing sure sounds fun. Maybe I should try it.”
Then we do.
Then about 8 posts in we get some asswipe in the comments who basically tells us we’re the spawn of Satan.
Then we curl into ourselves and the rest of our week is absolutely ruined.
But there’s an upside to this..
As A Blogger, You Learn How To Take Criticism Better
I don’t need to elaborate on that, but I will.
As a blogger you take criticism on the chin time and time again. Your ideas are constantly being tested.
In the real world, we largely associate with people who are just like us — therefore our ideas are never strained.
Online, that all goes out the window.
Prepare to get humbled, chewed up, then spat back out.
Here’s The Silver Lining
A few years ago Casey Neistat interviewed Logan Paul on his Youtube Channel. I love Casey, I loved this interview, but that’s not how the vast majority of viewers felt.
This video got 77,000 dislikes. That’s an unreal amount of dislikes, considering he had 133,000 upvotes.
People came for him in the comments.
It wasn’t pretty.
The same thing happens with my man Gary Vaynerchuk. A lot of people are turned off by him because they think he’s arrogant, disingenuous, and generally just a loudmouth dumbass.
But then there’s the overwhelming majority of people that swear he’s single-handedly helped them start million dollar businesses, pay off student debt, and even stop themselves from committing suicide.
Who are you going to believe?
Is he a terrible, arrogant, disingenuous guy who makes crap content only to benefit himself, or is he something more?
Here’s the bottom line..
Some people will never see the vision. Hook. Line. Sinker. Some people will miss the mark so much when reading your content and there’s nothing you can do about it.
You can’t make them see that you’re actually not a sh*t person.
Just accept that they’re one of the “fallen,” and move on.
You’re going to piss people off in this game. Even on articles where your only motive was to spread joy and happiness. You’ll still piss people off.
Just understand that:
It’s making you better.
It’s actually quite normal in blogging.
Only you know your true character.
Then keep scrolling.
Thank you. I used to think I should respond to the negative comments, but you've made a great point. Responding only let's the real sh*tperson think they've "won."
The ones who criticise tend to have very low self-esteem and feel the need to bring others down to below their level.
